Haze (version for brass)
Haze is a piece that plays simultaneously with contrasting harmony and timbres. It uses swells in dynamic to slowly meander through harmonies that bleed over each other to create a smooth, blurry quality. The ensemble is structured into two units: the trumpets and trombones and the horns, euphonium, and tuba; hence, the nonstandard ordering in the score. This means that in addition to one harmony smoothly emerging from within another, there is also a smooth timbral shift from one chord to the next.
